Permissions - Introduction

All Bloomsbury books are protected by copyright, and so unless otherwise stated, you are not permitted to copy or reproduce material from publications without our express permission. If however, you are a teacher in a UK school, you already hold CLA’s Education Licence, which covers you to copy 5% from a Bloomsbury book that your school owns. Find out more at www.cla.co.uk/licencetocopy

If you wish to reproduce, reprint, perform or copy any part of a Bloomsbury publication, please read the following guidelines before submitting your request.

To apply for permission to use material from Bloomsbury publications please complete the appropriate form available for download below with all of the details relevant to your request. Please note we cannot process requests over the telephone.

Our minimum permission fee is £250 / $300 USD.

Visit our Performance Rights Permissions page for full details about who to apply to for performance rights, and for a complete list of the rights held by Bloomsbury.

If the requested material is not from any of the above imprints, please check the copyright page at the front of the book for information that another publisher previously published the title. If this is the case, you should apply to the original publisher directly.

If the requested material is part of an anthology or collection, or is an illustration or photograph, please check the acknowledgment pages at the front or back of the book for information that the rights are controlled by another party. If this is the case, you will need to apply to them directly.

Under UK law, copyright expires at the end of the period 70 years from the end of the calendar year in which the author dies, unless the work has been published posthumously. If the copyright has expired, the original text may be reproduced without permission.

If your enquiry relates to a title published before 1930, we are extremely unlikely to hold the rights and will be unable to process your request.

If you are an educational institution and are registered with PLS, you do not need to request our permission to photocopy but need to log any photocopying in the normal way. No permission is needed to reproduce material which is marked photocopiable.

Please allow up to eight weeks to process a request. We receive a very large number of permission requests and many of these require us to track down and consult authors, artists, their agents or estates.
